"FUN & FRIVOLITY: BBQ FLAVOR" A BIG SUCCESS!

The “Fun & Frivolity 2016” fundraising event held on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at the home of John Oden and Mark Dizik was a huge hit. Over 150 people attended the event in support of the Models of Excellence scholarship competition. We were entertained by Dianne Gire, keyboard artist and vocalist (with a bit of Patti Rayne thrown in) and the comedy troupe, “Queer on Their Feet” (comics Jennie McNulty, Matthew Moore, and Diana Yanez). Once again, Chef Ivory of Cuvee’s Culinary Creations, provided us with mouth watering delights. Last year’s scholarship recipients, Caleb Portales and Emma Rumpf-Snavely, both gave heartfelt talks about their college experiences and how the scholarship has helped with their expenses.

DR. VIRGINIA URIBE A 2012 CSW HONOREE

Each year, Christopher Street West recognizes people and groups that have especially impacted the LGBTQ community with a demonstrated commitment to greater visibility and understanding, advocacy, human rights, empowerment, marriage equality and service.

For an extraordinary lifetime of work, Christopher Street West is honored to present Dr. Virginia Uribe with the Morris Kight Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Virginia Uribe is a fearless advocate for LGBT youth. 28 years ago at Fairfax High School she was the one teacher gay students could confide in. At the time, just one year after the discovery of AIDS, this was not only strikingly controversial and but also revolutionary.

The supportive atmosphere and safe space Dr. Uribe created in her classroom morphed into Project 10, the renowned LAUSD district-wide program that provides support for LGBT students. Project 10 also works with school administrators and tries to create campuses that are free from bullying. Remarkably, this program is still the only one of its kind in the world. Dr. Uribe has continued working tirelessly to ensure LGBT youth are supported and spearheaded Models of Pride, a one-day conference for LGBTQ Youth and their allies.

To learn more about other 2012 Honorees, click here to visit the CSW Web Site.

MS. KITTIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A REALITY

We would like to thank all of the friends and family members of Ms. Kittie Doswell who so kindly contributed to her scholarship fund.

Ms. Kittie Doswell and her life partner, Terry Lynn Padilla (TL), have been personal friends and true supporters of Friends of Project 10.

Through the years, both TL and Ms. Kittie volunteered to assist us for fundraisers and our events that served LGBTQ youth. Ms. Kittie faithfully helped out at our annual Models of Pride youth conference with set-up and registration. She “bartended” and was a food server at the LGBTQ Youth Prom. Her spirit and energy helped to make our events a welcoming and safe place for the young people we serve. Although she will be truly missed, her spirit remains!

LGBTQ YOUTH PROM NEWS & PHOTOS

The 18th annual LGBTQ Youth Prom, sponsored by Friends of Project 10, was held on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Friendship Auditorium in Los Angeles. Middle school and high school students from Southern California area schools enjoyed an eloquent evening of dining at dancing to the music of DJ Rick Dominguez. Entertainment was provided by the highly energetic Fanatix. The room was beautifully transformed with decorations donated by Billy and Brian Buchkavitz, rentals by Walter Borchert of Town & Country Event Rentals, and Curt Stahl & Ray Thompson of Images by Lighting.

And, of course, we cannot thank our event volunteers enough for all of their help. They were the "worker bees" for the evening. Last, thank you to the beautiful and handsome students and their chaperones who made this such a special evening for all.
