Virginia Uribe, PhD.
Executive Director

"As long as I have a breath in me, I will continue to fight for the rights of gay and lesbian students."

Virginia Uribe, PhD., teacher and counselor at Fairfax High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 42 years, founded the program known as Project 10 in 1984. This groundbreaking program was the first in the nation’s history to address antigay harassment and discrimination in public schools. Project 10 became the model for school districts throughout the United States and other countries for addressing LGBT youth issues. In 1986, Dr. Uribe created Friends of Project 10 Inc., the nonprofit arm of the Project 10 program. Retiring from the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1998, she continued her role as the Executive Director and Director of Development for Friends of Project 10 Inc.

Recognizing from the beginning the issues faced by LGBT youth and their families, she has focused much of her energy on reconciling children and their parents. At the annual Models of Pride youth conference, she was instrumental in implementing the all-day parent workshops which foster understanding, reduction of stigma, and support and advocacy for LGBT children.

Dr. Uribe has articulated her case for civil rights on national and local radio, television programs and in the print media including substantive feature articles in the Los Angeles Times and USA Today. She remains a dedicated advocate and strong voice for human rights. In addition to her speaking engagements, Dr. Uribe has published extensively about LGBT youth issues. Her articles have appeared in publications such as Education Digest, High School Journal, Theory into Practice and a special issue of the Harvard Educational Review.
